Cadets and students represent The Citadel at U.S. Department of Transportation Beyond Traffic Workshop

2015 Nov 5

Cadets and students from The Citadel's civil engineering department participated in the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Beyond Traffic Workshop alongside many high-ranking transportation officials. Some of the dignitaries included U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Anthony Foxx; North Carolina Secretary of Transportation, Nick Tennyson; Mayor of Atlanta, Kasim Reed; and Mayor of Charleston, Joseph P. Riley. The event was organized by the USDOT to gain knowledge of future traffic and transportation needs across 11 mega region areas across the United States. This workshop focused on the Atlantic Piedmont mega region including North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Citadel civil engineering students were assigned the responsibility of taking notes for the dignitaries named above in a panel that was led by Secretary Foxx. Additionally, students documented proceedings of group discussions, the results of which will be incorporated into policy documents of the USDOT through their Program Beyond Traffic 2045. Group discussions facilitated by Citadel students focused on brainstorming ideas for the future of transportation and ideas to improve the current transportation situation.

Kelsey Schlegel of Mullins, South Carolina (29574), was among 19 other students that participated in the USDOT Beyond Traffic Workshop.
