2013 Mar 5

Cadet Capt. Djordon Lee Porter of Columbia, SC, is the 2013 recipient of one of The Citadel's most prestigious awards recognizing cadet excellence and leadership – the Medal of the Society of the Cincinnati of South Carolina Award.

"We are proud of what Cadet Porter has accomplished while at The Citadel. His actions are a great credit to the college and the Corps of Cadets," said Commandant of Cadets Col. Leo Mercado. "This award signifies that Cadet Porter embodies the qualities of a good citizens and soldiers as he works tirelessly to lead the Corps with a focus on our core values of honor, duty and respect."

The Society of the Cincinnati Award is given annually to the senior cadet officer who best exemplifies the combined qualities of a good soldier and a good citizen – characteristics of the patriots who fought to obtain America's freedom and which the Society pledges to perpetuate. These citizen-soldier characteristics are modeled after Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, a Roman farmer who became a successful general, and charter members of the Society of the Cincinnati, including George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Marquis de Lafayette.

Porter is currently serving as the commander of Foxtrot Company after having been recognized for outstanding performance in past leadership roles. Porter is an applied physics major as well as the president of the Society of Physics Students. He will be commissioned in the Air Force upon his graduation in May.
