The Citadel's Wei-Ming Chiu to be Summer Globetrotter

2012 Feb 1

Wei-Ming Chiu of Pingtung County, Taiwan, will travel to Australia this summer thanks to a grant from The Citadel's Star of the West Foundation.

Chiu, is a cadet majoring in Civil Engineering and will study sustainable engineering.

The Star of the West International Summer Scholars is a one-time grant to support the academic enrichment of cadets whose project proposals presented a clear connection between the summer experience and their goals after graduation.

Chiu is among 12 Citadel students awarded a total of $73,053 from the Star of the West Foundation, which helps make this type of opportunity possible.

"Following The Citadel's strategic initiatives, we are committed to exposing our cadets to international opportunities," said Provost and Dean of the College Sam Hines. "As the world becomes smaller in this digital age, it is imperative for our education to become broader so that our graduates are better prepared to practice principled leadership."

The Star of the West Foundation is a trust that was established in 1945 through the tremendous vision and compassion of the late Col. William W. Wannamaker, Citadel Class of 1919. The foundation makes this annual grant in an effort to strengthen The Citadel's global initiatives. Students submit proposals based on specific academic studies, and awards are based on academic class standing, the quality of their proposals and letters of reference. This year's competition was competitive and demonstrates the strong academic caliber of Citadel students, Hines said.

The Citadel, founded in 1842, is a public, coeducational military college in Charleston, S.C., that offers a classic military education for young men and women seeking a college experience that is intense, meaningful and academically strong. with the core values of honor, duty and respect, The Citadel prepares principled leaders for the military as well as the global workplace.
